N.C. (spring return normally closed type) diagram
When pilot solenoid valve 8 is not energized (or when air is exhausted from 12 (P1) port of the air operated type), valve 4 linked to piston 6 is closed via the action of the return spring 7.
For Opening the Valve
When the pilot solenoid valve is energized (or when pressurized air enters through port 12 (P1) of the air operated type), the pilot air that has entered under the piston moves upward, opening the valve.
For Closing the Valve
When the power to the pilot solenoid valve is cut (or when fluid is exhausted from port 12 (P1) of the air operated type), the pilot air under the piston is exhausted and the valve closed via the action of the return spring.

In contrast for the N.C. type, when the power to the pilot solenoid valve is shut off (or when air is exhausted from port 10 (P2) of the air operated type), unenergized, the valve is held open via the return spring.
When the pilot solenoid valve is energized (or when pressurized air enters through port 10 (P2) of the air operated type), the valve closes.
